The richness of the collections - the way the Reina Sofia tells some of the modern history of Spain through art, the construction of Guernica through Dora Mar's photographs, the outstanding and uncrowded Thyssen-Bornemisza

Getting in and having special access was fundamental to enjoying the tour and avoiding the long queues at the door. Avoiding the long queues was the highlight of choosing to buy the tickets through the APP, the ease of purchase, the quick turnaround and the communications too. Just one observation: the tour is long and it's practically impossible to do it all in one day. Another important point of this ticket is the possibility of visiting any day within a year and on any day of the week and at any time. However, this is good for those who can be in Madrid for more days and organize their schedule. That's fantastic!

We had to wait for at least 25 minutes in the cold before getting into the museum. Your instructions of arriving there 15 minutes earlier along with a delay of getting into the building made us quite uncomfortable. Also, we thought this was a private tour, but it ended up as part of a teamof 13 people in total. I must admit the guide was good and she kept our interest throughout the tour

For those of us who wear hearing aids because we are deaf, they should offer hearing aids that go over the ear instead of in the ear, because when we remove a hearing aid to hear the guide we hear all the ambient noise, which in this case was the noisy guides with school children. In the case of the art at the Reina Sofia Museum, I would prefer anecdotes about the paintings, the museum and the painters rather than the guide's personal interpretation of the works.

-We booked an hour and a half visit, but it didn't last an hour. -Lack of punctuality. We were summoned at 12:45 (a quarter of an hour before we had to be there to check in) and we still had to wait because someone from the group was missing. -If the appointment with the guide was at the main entrance of the museum why did we have to go around the building and enter through the back door? Between this, handing out audios, going through the detector and going up the stairs to the tour floor we started at 13:15 (and finished at 14:09.

It was nice. Good route and nice audios while going around. The only thing I didn't like was that it is named "Hop on Hop off tour" but its a bus without stops, so especially with kids it would have been better to have that option of going down whenever you'd like.

ould have been a great tour but there were no stops - unfortunately also no real visible info prior bying the tickets. That's a huge dissatisfaction for some of the spots we would have liked to visit a bit longer and continue the tour later which was not possible - but the tickets were already bougt.

Plus points: - always good to have a general view of a city - the 2 routes - historical & modern - are interesting Minuses: - too bad there weren't any intermediate stops so you could get off/climb to visit the sights - not all audio outlets worked properly - staff a bit nitpicky: with QR-Code + validity date, excessive to ask for printed tickets again

It was nice to be able to see Madrid above street level because then you really see how beautiful the buildings are. The tour itself was not very fascinating little was told about the history of the city or certain places, just which architect designed it. I would have liked to hear a little more.

We started at Tysenn. Everything went very smoothly, the accreditation and the entrance. Not so in the Pardo (the second visit) where there was the main queue and a second shorter queue (20' wait) to accredit the QR code. With the Reina Sofia we finally had a second shorter queue, but as there were less visitors there were a couple of minutes of waiting.

I bought the tickets thinking I'd be able to get on and off at the places I wanted (HOP ON/OFF), but all I got was misleading advertising. The place to catch the bus was also not the most central or suitable for those on foot. It was worth the driver giving me some tips on how to get around Madrid by bus for free.

The ride and the audio guide were very good. What was not good was that there was no indication at the time of booking that there are currently no more hop-on hop-off tours in Madrid, only panoramic tours without stops. It was therefore not possible to get on the bus near our hotel as we had intended, so we had to ask around and walk to the starting point at the Prado MUSEUM.

1) I was confused when I got to the venue as to why I didn't already have a ticket. At one of the venues, the ticket office person initially rejected it as a valid voucher. I had to explain to her that it was. 2) the tour groups at the Prado make the experience impossible to enjoy for independent travelers. You should try to reserve certain hours of the day when tour groups aren't allowed to operate. They monopolize all the masterpieces.

I preferred the visit to the Prado Museum because it was set up differently albeit by the same guide. It was also richer in information about the historical and cultural background of the time when the works were created. The first part at the Reina Sofia museum, I found the museum's reception of the group poorly organized, with lots of downtime. The guide in presenting the works gave so much space for open-ended questions to the group about the feelings the paintings conveyed that I found it scattershot. The guide's knowledge of the works was impeccable.

Belen very capably led a small group tour of this most outstanding museum that showcases numerous masterworks of the modern era. She demonstrated a strong ability to describe complex artistic styles in clear English. Her deep background in Spanish art and history allowed a genuine enthusiasm to shine through. On a personal level, it also was a chance to see Picasso’s Guernica once again to close a circle of experience that spanned some 50 years.

Did you know that the Reina Sofía Museum houses Guernica, Pablo Picasso’s most politically powerful work, but it wasn’t always an art museum? Originally built as a hospital in the 18th century, it was transformed to showcase modern art, becoming home to Spain’s greatest 20th-century masterpieces. Beyond Picasso, works by Dalí and Miró fill its halls, making it a treasure trove of surrealism and history.

The heart of Reina Sofia, this 18th-century structure was originally a hospital designed by José de Hermosilla and Francisco Sabatini. Now, it houses the museum’s permanent collection, featuring 20th-century Spanish masterpieces, including Picasso’s iconic Guernica, Dalí’s The Great Masturbator, and Miró’s Girl at the Window. The building also includes a central courtyard and an outdoor sculpture garden.

Afternoon highlights
Late afternoon activities
Pablo Picasso's Guernica with visitors at Reina Sofia Museum, Madrid.
  • Start your journey with Picasso's monumental work, Guernica, located in Room 203. This powerful painting depicts the horrors of war and the suffering it inflicts on individuals. Spend time absorbing its emotional weight and historical context, as it remains one of history's most significant anti-war artworks.
  • Next, head to Room 205 to view Salvador Dalí's surreal masterpiece, "The Great Masturbator." This painting showcases Dalí's complex relationship with sexuality and identity, filled with dreamlike imagery that invites various interpretations.
  • Continue to Room 202 to explore Joan Miró's "Man with a Pipe," which exemplifies his playful use of color and form. This piece encourages visitors to engage with its abstract elements and emotional resonance.

Lunch break

  • Consider taking a break at the museum café or nearby restaurants that offer traditional Spanish cuisine.
Reina Sofia Museum, Madrid, Spain.
  • After lunch, explore Francis Picabia's "Totalizer" in Room 206. This avant-garde piece invites viewers into the experimental art movements of the 1920s, challenging perceptions of reality through its unique composition.
  • Return to Room 202 to view Miró’s "House with Palm Tree," which reflects his evolving style and connection to nature and architecture.

Reina Sofia Museum, Madrid, Spain.
  • Check for any temporary exhibitions that may be running during your visit. The museum often features works from Spanish and international artists reflecting contemporary themes.
  • If time permits, visit the museum's library, which houses over 1,000 videos and sound recordings related to art history, providing additional context to your visit.

Tips for visiting the Reina Sofia Museum

  • Plan your movement between buildings: The Nouvel Building (modern exhibits) connects with the Sabatini Building via a hidden second-floor corridor near the library. This saves you time and helps avoid retracing your steps back to the ground floor.
  • Optimal route for Picasso’s Guernica: Head to Room 206 (2nd Floor, Sabatini) directly from the main entrance if you're short on time. It's best to visit early to avoid the crowd and appreciate the full context provided by surrounding works.
  • Dress for the museum's climate: Museum rooms maintain a steady temperature of 21°C (69.8°F) for artwork preservation. Dress in layers, especially if it's hot outside, as the controlled climate can feel chilly after a while.
  • Restroom access shortcuts: Restrooms near the Sabatini courtyard have shorter queues compared to the ones on the main floors. In the Nouvel Building, the easiest-to-access restrooms are near the auditorium on the ground floor.
  • Rooftop secrets in the Nouvel Building: Many miss the panoramic rooftop terrace accessible from the Nouvel Building. It's a peaceful spot to relax with a view of Madrid’s skyline after exploring the intense modern art exhibits.
  • Managing time with large exhibits: Temporary exhibitions are often spread across both the Nouvel and Sabatini Buildings. Start from the upper floors of the Nouvel Building for a top-down exploration. Exhibits often have a narrative arc, with the climax near the end.
  • Cafeteria tips: The cafeteria on the Nouvel rooftop serves quality snacks and offers stunning views. Avoid peak hours between 1pm and 3pm when it gets crowded with locals and tourists alike.
  • Photography and quiet spaces: If you need a quiet break, check out the sculpture garden in the Sabatini courtyard—it’s a tranquil escape where you can sit among modern sculptures.
  • Art library for enthusiasts: The Nouvel Building's art library is an under-the-radar spot for research and quiet reflection. Visitors can access art-related texts, archives, and multimedia resources during library hours without an extra fee.
  • Ticket counter vs. mobile tickets: If you booked a mobile ticket, you can skip long queues by entering directly through the Nouvel entrance.
