Highlights

1. Great Meteoron Monastery

30 min

Great Meteoron, the largest and oldest of the Meteora monasteries, was founded in the 14th century and once housed up to 300 monks. It's museum, filled with rare manuscripts and artifacts, offers a deep dive into Orthodox Christian tradition and the ascetic lifestyle.

2. Varlaam Monastery

Situated on a small rock, this monastery is accessible via a beautiful stone bridge, making it the perfect spot for photographers who want to capture both the monastery’s intricate details and the surrounding natural landscape. Unlike other monasteries in the region, Rousanou is home to a community of nuns, providing a unique glimpse into the monastic way of life.

4. St. Nicholas Anapausas Monastery

I liked the service provided by the tour guide, the drivers and the company as a whole. Eva was so kind, considerate , and hospitable. She made sure everyone's needs were met. She answered all our questions with kindness. The tour itself was worth the long bus ride, the views from the bus were breathtaking. Meteora now holds a special place in our hearts. Its beauty and history is something to behold and remembered.

The excursion to Meteora was really worth it: the scenery is breathtaking and the perched monasteries are just incredible 😍 On the other hand, I'd like to comment on the organization... The bus journey is already very long, but on top of that, our bus broke down on the way 😬 We waited almost an hour for another one to come and pick us up, without any apology or explanation. Luckily, the place was worth it, because it was really magical once we got there ✨

At 2pm, begin your monastery visits. You'll have the chance to explore 3 to 4 monasteries, depending on the day, as each follows a rotational closing schedule. A small cash offering of €3 to €5 per person is required to enter each monastery. Perched atop vertical stone spires, the sites offer sweeping valley views and glimpses of frescoed chapels, ancient relics, and monastic life suspended in time.

Highlights

1. Great Meteoron Monastery

40 min

The largest and oldest of the six, Great Meteoron feels like a fortress in the sky. Inside, you’ll find an impressive museum with ancient manuscripts, religious icons, and a former kitchen with medieval tools still intact. The frescoes in the main church are striking and solemn, depicting scenes of martyrdom in vivid detail.

2. Varlaam Monastery

40 min

Varlaam is famous for its massive wooden wine barrel that once held 12,000 liters of wine—it’s still on display! The monastery’s chapel features delicate post-Byzantine frescoes, and its peaceful terrace offers sweeping views of the Pindus mountains. Climbing up, you’ll appreciate how monks once hauled supplies via rope and winch.

3. Rousanou Monastery

40 min

Run by nuns, Rousanou is one of the most photogenic monasteries, perched gracefully on a narrow rock. Its flower-filled courtyard and small chapel create a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The relatively easy access makes it a favorite for visitors looking for serenity and charm.

4. St. Stephen’s Monastery

40 min

This monastery feels more like a peaceful convent and is the easiest to reach—no steps, just a bridge. The interior is beautifully maintained, and the chapel of St. Charalambos holds a silver casket with his relics. The panoramic view over Kalambaka and the plains below is simply breathtaking.

5. Holy Trinity Monastery

40 min

Possibly the most dramatic, the Holy Trinity sits atop a narrow pinnacle and requires a bit of a hike to reach—worth every step. James Bond fans might recognize it from For Your Eyes Only! Inside, you’ll find a tiny chapel with stunning icons and a tranquil, monastic stillness.

6. St. Nicholas Anapausas Monastery

40 min

The smallest of the six, St. Nicholas, is packed with artistic treasures. The chapel walls are covered in vivid 16th-century frescoes by renowned painter Theophanes the Cretan. Despite its size, it offers a surprisingly intimate and spiritual experience high above the valley.

Our trip to Meteora was absolutely magnificent. Not only did it allow us to visit a UNESCO World Heritage site, but it also immersed us in Greek history. It's a testament to the resilience of the Greek people, who have always defended their culture and heritage. It's a true haven of peace, and the hermits were absolutely right to have chosen it as the site for their monasteries. The landscape is breathtaking and the monasteries... Words cannot describe their beauty, both exterior and interior, in terms of architecture, paintings and museums. I'd like to extend my warmest thanks to our guide, Maria, and bus driver, Chris (they'll excuse me for not remembering the Greek form of their first names). The entertainment lived up to our expectations and the atmosphere was more than friendly.

The place was amazing and the guide was very friendly and very professional.what I didn't like was the food.you sell it as a typical lunch and it is a kind of selfservice that gives you a choice of three dishes and a small plate with salad without dessert.I advise you to make the trip to Meteora but without the option of food.

You’ll explore 3 to 4 monasteries, depending on the day, as they follow a rotational closing schedule. A small cash offering of €3 to €5 per person is required for entry.

Highlights

1. Great Meteoron Monastery

30 min

The largest and oldest of the six, Great Meteoron, feels like a fortress in the sky. Inside, you’ll find an impressive museum with ancient manuscripts, religious icons, and a former kitchen with medieval tools still intact. The frescoes in the main church are striking and solemn, depicting scenes of martyrdom in vivid detail.

2. Varlaam Monastery

30 min

Varlaam is famous for its massive wooden wine barrel that once held 12,000 liters of wine—it’s still on display! The monastery’s chapel features delicate post-Byzantine frescoes, and its peaceful terrace offers sweeping views of the Pindus mountains. Climbing up, you’ll appreciate how monks once hauled supplies via rope and winch.

3. Rousanou Monastery

30 min

Run by nuns, Rousanou is one of the most photogenic monasteries, perched gracefully on a narrow rock. Its flower-filled courtyard and small chapel create a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The relatively easy access makes it a favorite for visitors looking for serenity and charm.

4. St. Stephen’s Monastery

30 min

This monastery feels more like a peaceful convent and is the easiest to reach—no steps, just a bridge. The interior is beautifully maintained, and the chapel of St. Charalambos holds a silver casket with his relics. The panoramic view over Kalambaka and the plains below is simply breathtaking.

5. Holy Trinity Monastery

30 min

Possibly the most dramatic, the Holy Trinity sits atop a narrow pinnacle and requires a bit of a hike to reach—worth every step. James Bond fans might recognize it from For Your Eyes Only! Inside, you’ll find a tiny chapel with stunning icons and a tranquil, monastic stillness.

6. St. Nicholas Anapausas Monastery

30 min

The smallest of the six, St. Nicholas, is packed with artistic treasures. The chapel walls are covered in vivid 16th-century frescoes by renowned painter Theophanes the Cretan. Despite its size, it offers a surprisingly intimate and spiritual experience high above the valley.

Very easy and straightforward booking, with clear joining instructions for the Meteora tour. Our guide Konstantina and driver Dimitris were both excellent. Well timed stops for refreshments and comfort breaks. Excellent choice of restaurant for lunch. Comfortable new Mercedes minibus. The site at Meteora was magnificent: a natural wonder! The only thing I didn't like was the fact that women visitors at the monasteries were required to wear an additional long skirt even if they were already wearing full-length trousers: a very antiquated and discriminatory attitude towards women!

The place was amazing and the guide was very friendly and very professional.what I didn't like was the food.you sell it as a typical lunch and it is a kind of selfservice that gives you a choice of three dishes and a small plate with salad without dessert.I advise you to make the trip to Meteora but without the option of food.
