Highlights

1. Great Meteoron Monastery

30 min

Great Meteoron, the largest and oldest of the Meteora monasteries, was founded in the 14th century and once housed up to 300 monks. It's museum, filled with rare manuscripts and artifacts, offers a deep dive into Orthodox Christian tradition and the ascetic lifestyle.

2. Varlaam Monastery

30 min

Tickets included

Varlaam is renowned for its exquisite frescoes, depicting biblical scenes that capture the essence of monastic life. While smaller in size than the Great Meteoron, Varlaam housed over 40 monks in its prime and is considered one of the most important examples of Byzantine monastic architecture.

3. Rousanou Monastery

30 min

Situated on a small rock, this monastery is accessible via a beautiful stone bridge, making it the perfect spot for photographers who want to capture both the monastery’s intricate details and the surrounding natural landscape. Unlike other monasteries in the region, Rousanou is home to a community of nuns, providing a unique glimpse into the monastic way of life.

4. St. Nicholas Anapausas Monastery

Perched atop a tiny rock, St. Nicholas Anapausas is one of the smallest yet most charming monasteries in Meteora. Originally founded as a hermitage, it provided the perfect sanctuary for early monks seeking solitude.

5. Holy Trinity Monastery

30 min

Perched atop a steep rock, Holy Trinity offers sweeping views of Meteora’s cliffs and valleys, making it a favorite spot for stunning sunset photos. If you’re a fan of For Your Eyes Only, you’ll recognize it as the backdrop for some of the film's most iconic scenes.

6. St. Stephen's Monastery

I liked the service provided by the tour guide, the drivers and the company as a whole. Eva was so kind, considerate , and hospitable. She made sure everyone's needs were met. She answered all our questions with kindness. The tour itself was worth the long bus ride, the views from the bus were breathtaking. Meteora now holds a special place in our hearts. Its beauty and history is something to behold and remembered.

The excursion to Meteora was really worth it: the scenery is breathtaking and the perched monasteries are just incredible 😍 On the other hand, I'd like to comment on the organization... The bus journey is already very long, but on top of that, our bus broke down on the way 😬 We waited almost an hour for another one to come and pick us up, without any apology or explanation. Luckily, the place was worth it, because it was really magical once we got there ✨

The rock spires of Meteora aren’t just for photographing—they’re for climbing, walking, and discovering. Hiking in Meteora is a highly recommended way to explore the UNESCO-listed wonder. And with a professional guide handling logistics, all you have to do is walk and soak in the wonder.

Why choose a Meteora hiking tour?

  • Expert local guidance
More than just pointing out trails, your guide will be sharing stories, identifying wildlife, and showing you hidden viewpoints most travelers miss.
  • All logistics handled
From permits and entrance tickets to hotel pickup and gear, everything’s sorted so you can hike stress-free.
  • Routes for every level
Options range from relaxed valley strolls to moderate loops and more adventurous circuits—perfect for both beginners and seasoned hikers.
  • Small groups or private tours
Enjoy quiet, curated walks with room to explore at your own pace.
  • Monasteries and mountains
Many hikes pass active monasteries and overlook valleys that have barely changed in 500 years.

What’s included in the guided hiking tour?

  • Luxury round-trip transfers from Kalabaka or Kastraki in a VIP Mercedes minibus
  • Expert-guided meetup at Mesochori, the historic heart of Kastraki
  • Scenic Meteora hiking tour with sweeping views of all six cliffside monasteries
  • Intimate small-group experience, limited to 12 guests for personalized attention
  • Professional English-speaking mountain guide for in-depth insights
  • French or Italian-speaking guide available upon request (subject to availability)
  • Admission to one monastery, typically the Great Meteoron or Varlaam (rotates based on open days)
  • Complimentary bottled water provided onboard

Essential tips to make it smooth

  • Sweet-spot seasons: Visit April–June or September–October for mild days, clear skies, and lighter crowds.
  • Dress code: Knees and shoulders must be covered inside monasteries. A lightweight scarf or sarong works.
  • Footwear matters: Expect 150–300 steps per monastery—wear grippy shoes and pack a refillable bottle.
  • Book early: Peak-summer and long-weekend departures can sell out two to three months in advance.
  • Cash on hand: A few monasteries still charge €3 entrance in cash only—keep small change ready.

Essential tips for your hiking adventure

  • Gear up properly
Comfortable hiking shoes are a must. Layered clothing works best—mornings can be chilly, and midday sun gets intense if you’re hiking in summer.
  • Prep your fitness
Even easy hikes involve stairs and rocky terrain. A bit of cardio before your trip—stair climbing, walking, or cycling—goes a long way.
  • Pick the right season
April to June and September to October are ideal. Fewer crowds, mild temperatures, and great trail conditions.
  • Guided vs self-guided
While solo hiking is possible, guided tours simplify everything—routes, timing, safety, and access to areas you might otherwise miss.

What to carry and wear?

  • Comfortable hiking shoes or trail sneakers
Grippy soles are key. Meteora trails can be uneven, rocky, or slippery in places.
  • Light backpack or daypack
Enough to hold your water, camera, snacks, and a light jacket.
  • Water bottle
Refillable preferred. There are taps at some monasteries, but it’s best to carry at least 1–1.5 liters.
  • Sun protection
Hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen are essential, especially in spring/summer.
  • Weather-appropriate layers
Morning hikes may start chilly even in summer. Bring a light jacket or windbreaker; in cooler months, pack fleece or thermal wear.
  • Rain gear (seasonal)
A compact poncho or light rain jacket is smart if traveling in spring or fall.
  • Cash (€)
Needed for monastery entrance fees (typically €3 per site, cash only) and small local purchases.
  • Snacks
Energy bars, nuts, or fruit, especially helpful for mid-hike energy.
  • Camera or smartphone with space
The views are spectacular—don’t miss capturing them!

For Monastery entry

  • Monasteries require visitors to be covered in modest clothing— knees and shoulders to be covered. This can include long skirts (below the knees), long pants, and sleeved T-shirts or shirts.
  • Many tours provide wraps at entry, but it's safer to bring your light scarf or sarong.

Optional but helpful

  • Walking sticks/trekking poles (if you have knee concerns)
  • Portable power bank
  • Local map or offline navigation app like Maps.me
  • Tissues/wet wipes for monastery restrooms

Frequently asked questions about Meteora hiking tour

What is the best time to hike in Meteora?

Spring (April–June) and fall (September–October) offer the best weather—cool mornings, clear skies, and fewer crowds. Summer hikes start early to beat the heat.

Do I need prior hiking experience?

Not at all. Beginners are welcome on easy routes. Your guide will tailor the pace and offer support as needed.

What’s included in the tour price?

All park fees, monastery entrances, permits, water bottles, and transport between trailheads.

Can I hike Meteora without a guide?

Yes, but trails can be hard to follow without signs, and some require permits. Guided tours make your experience easier with logistics being taken care of.

What should I pack for the hike?

Bring water, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), a light jacket, snacks, cash, and a small backpack. Sturdy shoes are essential.

What’s included in the hiking tour?

Typically: hotel pickup/drop-off (usually Kalambaka/Kastraki), professional mountain guide, bottled water, monastery entrance fees (usually 3–5 € per monastery), and sometimes snacks or lunch.

How long is the hike and total tour?

Standard tours run 4–5 hours.

Can I take photos inside the monasteries?

Photography is generally allowed outside the monasteries with restrictions inside. Guides recommend checking each monastery’s rules.

Is water and restroom access available?

Yes—monasteries typically have taps (for refills) and basic restrooms. Bottled water is often provided or recommended.

The trip was good. Guide Mr Nick have shown and explain about the monastery. It was not easy to find out the bus to Meteora as no one there to identify the bus. It has to be improved and helpful to the customer. Finally got it.

Very easy and straightforward booking, with clear joining instructions for the Meteora tour. Our guide Konstantina and driver Dimitris were both excellent. Well timed stops for refreshments and comfort breaks. Excellent choice of restaurant for lunch. Comfortable new Mercedes minibus. The site at Meteora was magnificent: a natural wonder! The only thing I didn't like was the fact that women visitors at the monasteries were required to wear an additional long skirt even if they were already wearing full-length trousers: a very antiquated and discriminatory attitude towards women!

The place was amazing and the guide was very friendly and very professional.what I didn't like was the food.you sell it as a typical lunch and it is a kind of selfservice that gives you a choice of three dishes and a small plate with salad without dessert.I advise you to make the trip to Meteora but without the option of food.
