Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac

On a voyage across four continents

Situated at the foot of the iconic Eiffel Tower, on the banks of River Seine, the Quai Branly Museum is a must-visit attraction in Paris.

The Quai Branly Museum was inaugurated in 2006 to showcase art, artifacts and rituals from non-indigenous cultures from Oceania, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. If you’re a cultural enthusiast looking to learn something new, Quai Branly Museum is a great experience for you.

Read on to learn about your ticket options and other information you would need to fully discover the Quai Branly Museum.

Things to know before you book your tickets to the Quai Branly Museum

  • Visit the Quai Branly Museum only if you’re interested in non-European art, culture, and rituals. It houses a diverse collection of 300,000 art pieces – including pieces of jewelry, idols, and masks.
  • The ticket gives you access to permanent collection and temporary exhibitions as well, so check the venue website for information on the ongoing exhibitions and their timelines.
  • Entry is free for children under the age of 18 (non-EU citizen), adults under the age of 26 (EU citizen), and for the differently abled with a companion
  • Entry is free on the first Sunday of each month.
  • All areas of the museum are accessible to people with reduced mobility.

Why visit the Quai Branly Museum?

1. Unique cultural fusion: The museum features a rich collection of over 700,000 photographs and 300,000 artifacts and objects (musical instruments, fabrics, and clothing) from across Asia, Africa, Oceania, and The Americas, taking you on a fascinating cultural journey.

2. Architectural marvel: Jean Nouvel’s design idea for Quai Branly Museum was - “it is a museum built around a collection.” To achieve this, the museum was perched on stilts, docked on the banks of the River Seine, surrounded by a verdant landscape (designed by Gilles Clément), covering an area of 18,000 m2.

3. Immersive exhibitions: The museum explores unique themes, such as – identity, globalization, and cultural exchange, thus challenging perceptions and encouraging dialogues. It’s not just a visual exhibit, it’s a whole sensory experience at Quai Branly Museum.

4. Ethnographic approach: Unlike traditional art museums where paintings, sculptures, and the decorative arts are collected, preserved, and exhibited in galleries for aesthetic appreciation, the Quai Branly Museum adopts an ethnographic approach which focuses on collecting, studying, and presenting artifacts and objects related to the cultures, customs, traditions of different ethnic groups and societies.

Learn about the history of the Quai Branly Museum

Jacques René Chirac, president of France in 1995, commissioned the construction of the $300 million Quai Branly Museum as a “debt we owe to the peoples and countries” of the former French empire.

The Quai Branly Museum started off as an art gallery in the Pavillon des Sessions of the southwest wing of the Louvre Museum in 2000 with the display of 108 tasteful masterpieces.
