If you’re planning your day trip during peak tourism season (July to August), we recommend you book your trip a month in advance. You’d rather not be swarmed by crowds? Then book your trip 2 to 3 weeks in advance during the spring and fall months (March to May and September to October).
Capri is about 267 km (166 miles) from Rome, with the journey ranging from 2.5 to 4.5 hours, depending on land and sea traffic. So, carry something to snack on as the rolling hills and mountains of Campania fly past your window.
Carry a fully charged phone and power bank with you. A Rome to Capri day trip will be long and fast-paced. Stopping to charge your phone somewhere means losing time you could be spending visiting the next attraction on your list.
If you’re traveling to Capri with your partner, remember to exchange a kiss with them when sailing under the natural archway of the Faraglioni Rocks. According to local legend, the kiss grants you good luck.

Best ways to reach Capri from Rome

Best for: Fast & convenient travel | Duration: 1.5 to 2 hours by train, followed by 1 to 1.5 hours by ferry | Cost: Tickets start at €13 for the train and €14 for the ferry.

Frequency: 2 to 3 trains an hour. Ferry frequency depends on the port of boarding and season of travel.

Timings: The earliest train to Naples is at 05:00am and the last train leaves at 12:15am. The earliest ferry from the ports of Naples departs at 05:30am and the last ferry is at 08:15pm.

Board the Eurostar Frecciarossa (TAV) from Roma Termini Station and get off an hour later at the Napoli Centrale Station.
Once you reach Naples, you can board a ferry to Capri from one of the two ports: Molo Beverello and Calata Porta di Massa.

Best for: Scenic & flexible travel

Duration: 2.5 to 3.5 hours by car, and 1 to 1.5 hours of ferrying.

Cost: €38-€55 for car fuel charges. Ferry tickets begin at €14.

If you’re driving from Rome to Naples, take the A1/E45 motorways, and watch as the Lazio and Campania countryside pass by.
Bear in mind that Capri is motor vehicle-free for most of the year. So if you’re driving to Capri, you’ll have to park your car at Molo Beverello, Calata Porta di Massa, or Parcheggio Brin before boarding your ferry.
Regular ferries depart from Calata Porta di Massa, although they take longer to reach Capri. The high-speed ferries, on the other hand, depart from Molo Beverello.

Best time for your Rome to Capri day trip

Peak vs. shoulder seasons: If you want to experience the perfect beach weather and don’t mind tourist crowds or waiting in long queues, the ideal time to visit Capri is during peak season (July to August). However, if you’re looking for a budget-friendly option, then visiting in the spring (March to May) or fall (September to October), might be the best option for you.
Climate considerations: In the spring months (March to May), temperatures in Capri range between 6°C to 22°C (43°F - 72°F). In early fall (September to October), temperatures are just as mild, from 12°C to 29°C (54°F - 84°F). In the summer months of July and August, however, the heat is stifling, with temperatures ranging from 18°C to 29°C (64°F - 84°F). If you don’t mind feeling damp and muddy due to spring and fall showers, we recommend traveling in those seasons. You can’t stand the rain when visiting the coast? Then visit Capri in the summer!

What to bring on a Rome to Capri day trip

Light luggage. Not only is it easier to travel light, but a bulky bag will occupy a lot of space in the bus and crowd the aisles and luggage racks.
Carry a reusable water bottle and stay hydrated throughout the day!
Wear sunscreen, wide-brimmed hats, and linen shawls to protect you from sun damage.
Sunglasses are a must; and not just to protect your eyes from the Mediterranean sun. They are the best beach photo accessory you can ask for. So put on your shades and get clicking!
If you’re traveling during the fall (September to October), carry an umbrella with you, unless you want to get caught in short wet spells.
Carry your swimwear if you can fit an hour of swimming or sunbathing into your schedule.
Wear comfortable walking shoes on your trip. However, if you’re worried about getting water on them during the ferry ride, carry a pair of flip-flops and change into them before you board.
Watch out for pickpockets. Ensure that your phone, wallet, and keys are secure. We also recommend not wearing any expensive jewelry or watches on this tour.
