Things to know before booking Colosseum experiences

  • Your basic entry to the Colosseum doesn't automatically grant access to the Arena, Underground, or levels 3-5. Tickets to view these sections must be purchased separately.
  • The Colosseum waiting queues can be notoriously long, especially during peak season. Book timed-access in advance to save at least 2-3 hours you might otherwise spend in these lines, and head straight right into the amphitheater.
  • Pressed for time? Book an express guided tour and zip in and out of the Colosseum in just an hour. Note that unlike standard guided tours, express tours don't include access to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. Regular guided tours are also longer in duration, usually lasting at least 3 hours.
  • Note that most tickets to the Colosseum grant access to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. Don't miss out on these attractions as they comprise the triumvirate of ancient Rome. Bear in mind that as the entrance to the Palatine and Forum is not timed, there is no way to skip the line here.
  • Not a fan of crowds? Trust us, we know how busy the Colosseum can get, regardless of the time of year. Book a small-group guided tour to see the attraction's top features under the expertise of a local tour guide.
  • For the added thrill, consider booking a VR tour of the Colosseum. Watch gladiator combats come alive and enjoy an immersive experience of glories long past. Your kids are sure to love this one!

Colosseum Belvedere Tickets

While the 3rd, 4th, and 5th tiers are considered part of the Colosseum Belvedere, the Belvedere is mostly used to refer to the 5th level as it means 'beautiful view'. From this uppermost level of the Colosseum, you will be able to enjoy panoramic views of Rome and the inside of the amphitheater from here. Historically, it was where the general public sat, farthest from the action but still part of the spectacle. The Belvedere was reopened to the public in 2017 after a long closure period for safety reasons.

Now, visitors can ascend to this level as part of a guided tour that specifically mentions access to the Belvedere.
