Enjoy a smooth start

Meet your licensed, kid-centric guide near the Colosseum and breeze past long entry lines. These guides are trained to engage young travellers with age-appropriate storytelling, games and visual prompts from the very first moment.

Inside the Colosseum

Step into the world’s largest ancient amphitheater and relive tales of gladiators, wild beasts, and roaring crowds. Kids swap long lectures for treasure hunts, role-plays, and multimedia quizzes.

Arch of Titus & Roman Forum

After exiting through the Arch of Titus, follow your guide into the Roman Forum. Here, children discover how Roman leaders shaped the ancient world through interactive exercises and fun challenges (e.g., “spot the emperor”, “decode the temples”).

Palatine Hill / Basilica of Maxentius

The tour continues into wider, outdoor ruins like Palatine Hill or the Basilica of Maxentius. With fewer crowds and no museum-style barriers, kids are free to safely explore and imagine life in ancient Rome while parents enjoy the view.

Wrap-up

Most tours end with a fun quiz or a small prize (sometimes even a gelato stop) and practical suggestions from the guide for other family-friendly activities in Rome. Small group sizes mean every child gets involved and no one is left behind.

Visit to the Colosseum and the Roman Forum truly memorable! Although it was November, the atmosphere was perfect and the sites even more impressive. Our guide was fantastic: brilliant, engaging and full of fascinating trivia. The two long hours literally flew by, but without ever losing content or insights. A very rich and enjoyable experience that I would recommend to anyone!

We couldn't find the headout representative, we called and were immediately given correct instructions. The representative was very kind and facilitated our access to the Coliseum.

Visiting the Colosseum was the highlight of our trip to Rome. I'm very glad we booked the arena access and guided tour. Our guide, an Italian gentleman, spoke excellent English and was extremely knowledgeable. It was fascinating to learn about its history and to see one of the Seven Wonders of the World firsthand. I would definitely recommend this experience to anyone—it was well worth every penny spent.

Know before you go

  • A valid photo ID is required for all guests — including children — to match the booking.
  • Rome can get very hot, especially between May and September. Bring hats, sunscreen and refillable water bottles (there are public fountains near the site where you can refill).
  • Wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes — you’ll cover uneven stones, stairways and ancient cobblestones.
  • If travelling with younger children, consider bringing a baby carrier instead of a stroller, as some parts of the ruins aren’t stroller-friendly.
  • A small notebook or sketchpad can be a fun way for kids to engage (many guides include drawing games or mini “quests”).
  • Large backpacks, food, glass bottles, sharp or pointed objects are not permitted inside and will be held up at the security gates.
  • There is no cloakroom, so pack light to make entry easier — every bag goes through a scanner.
  • The Colosseum has elevators to reach some terraces, but many sections of the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill have ancient rocky paths and steps.
  • Strollers can be used around the outer ring of the Colosseum, but must often be folded and carried inside.
  • Wheelchair access is available on specific itineraries only — contact your tour provider in advance if required.
  • Early morning and late-afternoon tours are less hot and less crowded, and generally better for younger kids’ attention spans.
  • Give kids a mini “pre-brief” (who were the gladiators? what was the Forum?) — it makes what they see feel like part of a story.
  • Keep snacks handy for after the tour: the Colosseum grounds have benches and a few shaded areas just outside the exit.
  • Ask your guide questions! Many kid-friendly guides carry props (gladiator cards, helmets, animal posters) and love interaction.
  • Tours run rain or shine. Bring lightweight rain jackets or ponchos if rain is in the forecast — umbrellas aren’t convenient in guided groups.
  • Restrooms are available inside the Colosseum (near the main entrance) but not inside the Forum or Palatine Hill — use them before your tour begins.
  • Names on the booking must match IDs; last-minute name changes are not accepted at the entrance. Arrive 15–20 minutes early for check-in and security.

Frequently asked questions about Colosseum family-friendly tours

Is this tour really worth it compared to a regular ticket?

Yes. Family-friendly tours are led by guides trained to engage kids using games, stories and visual aids, turning what might feel like “old ruins” into a real adventure. With skip-the-line access and kid-adapted commentary, you’ll get far more value than a self-guided visit.

What if my child loses interest halfway through?

Guides are used to keeping children engaged and mix in role-play, questions and interactive moments to avoid information overload. Most tours include short pauses and small breaks, and kids are free to ask questions or move around — it’s designed to be flexible.

Can we bring a stroller or baby carrier?

Lightweight strollers are fine around the Colosseum entrance area, but some sections have uneven stone paths and staircases. A baby carrier is usually far easier to manage once inside and highly recommended for toddlers.

Are these tours only for younger kids?

Not at all. Content and pacing are adapted to the age group of the tour participants. Younger kids enjoy games and stories, while older children and teens will appreciate access to areas like the Arena Floor and learning about ancient engineering, tactics and daily Roman life.

Do I need to book in advance?

Family tours (especially small-group and private options) sell out quickly — especially during school holidays and weekends. Booking in advance is strongly recommended to secure your preferred language and time slot.

What happens if it rains or gets very hot?

Tours run in all weather. In summer, many depart in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid peak heat. In case of heavy rain, some open-air areas may be skipped for safety, but the tour will continue with alternate stops or route adjustments.
